Election Day has finally arrived, and Upshur County voters are reminded to cast their ballots at local polling places today. Polls in Upshur County will be open until 7:30 p.m. as a number of races are decided, from president on down to county offices.

Even before Election Day arrived, West Virginians were going to the polls in droves, and election officials are predicting an early voting record.

A total of 3,386 people cast their vote early in Upshur County, according to County Clerk Debbie Thacker Wilfong. That number includes 1,797 Republicans, 1,304 Democrats and 285 non-partisan voters.

Early voting concluded Saturday, November 1.

According to figures collected Friday morning, nearly 122,000 state residents had cast ballots in West Virginia's 55 counties. That's about 10 percent of the state's eligible voters. In 2004, the state recorded 126,503 early votes.

Secretary of State Betty Ireland said this year's count is expected to set a record.

Ireland said the prediction is based on a normal surge in voters in the final days of early voting.

Thousands of voters also are requesting absentee ballots. So far, 11,000 ballots have been requested.
