WESTON — Buckhannon Post 7 saw their roller coaster ride through the American Legion Area V Baseball Tournament come to a disappointing end Friday in the tournament finals, where they lost to Elkins Post 29, 12-10.
After defeating Braxton Post 33 in their tournament opener Tuesday, Post 7 dropped into the losers’ bracket at the hands of Post 29, who scored seven runs in the seventh inning to claim a 14-6 victory. Buckhannon battled back in the semifinal round Friday, scoring 14 runs in the fifth inning en route to a 21-5 win over Weston Post 4, but ran out of gas in the finale Friday night.
“We lived and died by big innings all year,” Post 7 manager Rick Holley said after Friday’s title game. “Today, we had a big inning or two against Weston, but we just came up short tonight against Elkins. They’re an excellent baseball team and they’re well-coached.”
Evan Wright went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs and Levi Bender drove in three runs to lead Buckhannon in defeat in the area finale. Buckhannon led Elkins 3-2 through three innings and 8-7 after four, but Post 29 took command of the game with three runs in the seventh inning and a crucial insurance run in the eighth.
“We tried to be more patient at the plate and work the count,” Holley said. “We wanted to keep them from having short innings [defensively], but the guys were worn out by the time we were half-way through the second game.”
Brett Shreve led Elkins in the field and at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs, while also turning two double plays in the field – including a 6-3 double play in the ninth inning after Buckhannon put two runners aboard with no outs.
Brandon Robinson earned his third win of the year for Elkins, allowing two runs on three hits over five innings of relief. Heath Broughton pitched to three Buckhannon batters in the ninth and earned the save, striking out Taz Chidester for the final out after giving up an RBI triple to Tanner Collins.
With their pitching staff already depleted by Friday’s opening game, Post 7 was forced to pitch by committee, with Devin Cottrill absorbing the loss. Cottrill came in relief of Evan Wright in the fourth inning and allowed five runs over 3 1/3 innings. Alex Gaaserud gave up two hits and a run in the final inning and two-thirds.
“Our pitchers responded and did the best they could every time they took the mound,” Holley remarked. “All our kids all year have given everything they had. They did their role without question and did the best they could.”
Lance Vannoy scored the first run of the game for Elkins in the first inning, drawing a leadoff walk, going to second on Justin Kelley’s sacrifice bunt, taking third on a passed ball and scoring on a double steal. Buckhannon took a lead of their own in the second inning though, as Billy Kelley scored on Gaaserud’s ground out and Tyler Davis, who doubled to left, scored on a wild pitch.
In the third inning, Brock Hyre bunted for a base hit and scored on Billy Kelley’s RBI single, but Elkins matched with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Ryan Ware reached base on a fielder’s choice, took second on a balk and scored on Adam Fansler’s single to center.
Wright drove in a run with a single and Bender’s three-run double to left field punctuated a five-run Buckhannon rally in the fourth inning, but again Elkins matched that output in the home half of the inning. Shreve hit a two-run double, Spencer Webley and Ware followed with back-to-back RBI singles and J.C. Dakan drove in a run with an opposite-field double.
Elkins tied the game in the fifth inning, as Vannoy hit a leadoff double, went to third on another sacrifice bunt from Justin Kelley, then scored on Webley’s sacrifice fly to right.
Shreve’s RBI double scored VanNoy and kickstarted Elkins’ seventh-inning rally, which was punctuated by Dakan’s two-run single to right field. VanNoy then scored his fifth run of the game in the eighth inning, singling to right, moving up on a stolen base and a ground out and scoring on Shreve’s sacrifice fly to right.
Corbin Pugh, who entered the game for Buckhannon in place of Billy Kelley, scored the ninth-inning run for Post 7 after being hit by a pitch.
In Friday’s semifinal-round elimination game, Buckhannon trailed Weston Post by a 5-2 deficit midway through the fourth inning, but Post 7 exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth and a whopping 14 runs in the fifth inning.
Gaaserud, Collins, Chidester and Hyre scored the Buckhannon runs in the fourth inning, which saw Post 7 take advantage of two runs and four Weston errors. Then, in the fifth inning, Buckhannon sent 17 batters to the plate, scoring 14 runs on nine hits and three errors. Three of the Buckhannon hits went for extra bases, as Cottrill hit a two-run double, Davis hit a two-run home run and Hyre hit a three-run blast.
Kelley picked up the win for Buckhannon, relieving an injured Collins and pitching 4 2/3 innings. Kelley gave up five runs, only three of which were earned, on five hits.
Josh Burton suffered the loss for Weston, giving up eight runs on five hits in one inning of relief.
Thursday’s showdown between Buckhannon and Elkins had a similar feel, as the game was tied at 3-3 after three innings and Elkins led just 6-4 after six innings. However, Post 29 broke the game wide open in the seventh inning, scoring seven runs on two hits, six walks, a hit batsman and an error.
The game was halted in the bottom of the eighth inning due to the 10-run “mercy rule” after Webley’s RBI single drove in VanNoy.
Adam Fansler led Elkins at the plate with a 4-for-5 hitting performance and VanNoy and Ware each drove in a team-high three runs. Wright led Buckhannon with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate and two RBIs.
Brendan Miller struck out nine batters over 6 1/3 innings to earn the win for Elkins, while Casey Phillips picked up the save after 1 2/3 innings of work.
Wright was charged with the loss for Buckhannon, surrendering six runs on 11 hits through six innings.
With the Area V title under their belts, Elkins Post 29 will now travel to Morgantown this Thursday to begin state tournament play against the host squad, Morgantown Post 2, at 7 p.m. Tournament play will continue through Sunday at Hawley Field on the campus of West Virginia University.
