TENNERTON — Buckhannon-Upshur senior second baseman Brock Hyre was one of 14 elite players chosen for the 2009 All-North Central Athletic Conference first team.

Hyre, who played in all 22 games for head coach Adam Squires’ Bucs, led the team in hitting with a .380 average, runs scored (26) and stolen bases (14). Among his team-leading 30 hits were eight extra-bases hits, including five doubles, two triples and a home run.

Also earning all-conference honors on the 10-member second team was B-U senior Tanner Collins, who trailed just behind Hyre in hits and batting average. Collins, a versatile athlete who saw time on the mound, as well as at first base, left field and center field, racked up 28 hits for a .378 average. Collins drove in 20 runs, second best on the team, and made just two errors in the field all season, compiling a .941 fielding average.

Morgantown fielded three players on the all-conference first team, including Player of the Year Ben Miller. North Marion sophomore Maverick Myers was named Pitcher of the Year and Steve Naternicola, whose Fairmont Senior Polar Bears finished just one game shy of a seventh consecutive state tournament berth, repeated as Coach of the Year. The award was the fifth in Naternicola’s 21-year tenure at Fairmont Senior.
