Posted: Monday, Nov 12th, 2012

BUCKHANNON — Although not finished in time for The Record Delta’s 11 p.m. press deadline Tuesday, by midnight all precincts had been counted and the result remained the same.

In the race for Upshur County commissioner, Republican Troy A. “Buddy” Brady defeated Democrat Steve Abel with 4,874 votes to 3,137 votes (60.8 percent to 39.1 percent).

In the other contested county race, Republican Dave Coffman beat Independent Sherman Baxa with 4,519 votes to 2,881 votes (58.3 percent to 37.2 percent) for the office of sheriff. Write-in candidate Gilbert Valdez received 205 votes.

Assessor Helen Phillips, prosecuting attorney Jake Reger and surveyor Donna Matthews won re-election and were unopposed in the General Election.

Upshur County’s two Republican incumbent magistrates retained their seats. Magistrate Mike Coffman, the son of sheriff-elect Dave Coffman, earned 6,047 votes and Juanita Adams received 5,261 votes.

Del. Bill Hamilton, who was unopposed, retained his seat in what has been renamed the 45th delegate district.

For the new 44th delegate district, Upshur County resident Republican Robert Karnes won the county with 74 percent of the vote, but lost the race to Democrat Dana Lynch.

Del. Peggy Donaldson Smith was also unopposed in her renamed 46th district.

In the state senate race, Sen. Clark Barnes, R-11th, won Upshur County with 5,433 votes over Democrat Margaret Kerr Beckwith’s 2,278 votes. Barnes retained his seat.

County Clerk Debbie Thacker Wilfong said voter turnout stood at 59 percent with 8,341 people casting ballots out of 14,121 registered voters in the county.

“I was happy with voter turnout,” Wilfong said.

Just over 3,100 voted early in the county.

The canvass will begin Tuesday, Nov. 13.
