City considers ordinance to level civil penalties against synthetic drug sellers

BUCKHANNON — The City of Buckhannon continued discussion Thursday on how to address synthetic drug abuse.

City attorney Dave McCauley said there had been some discussion with Buckhannon Police Chief Matt Gregory and city administrator Michael Doss about some type of ordinance to prevent the sale of the substances in city limits.

“These folks that are manufacturing these bath salts are always one step ahead of the statutes which ban particular chemical configurations,” he said. “There are a couple enterprises right here in Buckhannon that are selling things that are not technically illegal as we speak. We would categorize them as lay people as being bath salts, but they are not technically illegal.”
