County to raise 911 fee?

Posted: Sunday, Jan 13th, 2013

BUCKHANNON — Over the last few years, the use of landlines in the county has dropped by about 25 percent.

To bring in more revenue for mounting expenses, the Upshur County Commission is considering an increase in the monthly 911 fee from $2.65 to $4.50 for residents and $6.50 for businesses.

County Administrator William Parker said the county’s current rate of $2.65 was average for the state based on his research a year ago.

“I can tell you the proposed $4.50 and $6.50 will be on the high end,” he said. “There are some that are $3 and something, some that are $2 and something.”

Parker said over the past few years there has been about a 25 to 30 percent reduction in the use of landlines.
