No mail on Saturdays?

Posted: Sunday, Feb 10th, 2013

BUCKHANNON — Six-day a week letter delivery to residences and businesses may be discontinued under a proposed move by the United States Postal Service.

In an announcement made Wednesday, the Postal Service would like to end Saturday delivery of letters to residences in August of this year, a move that is expected to save the agency $2 billion a year.

The Postal Service would still offer package delivery on Saturdays, and mail would also continue to be delivered to post office boxes, according to USPS communications specialist Cathy Yarosky.

“Under a resolution, Congress has mandated us to a six-day-a-week delivery,” she said. “It’s a resolution that is renewed every year. There are six weeks during the year when the resolution is not in effect. We have until March 27, when the continuing resolution expires.”
