Posted: Thursday, Feb 14th, 2013

Whitney Hyre, 22, took his eyes off the road and veered into a railroad signal on Fifth Street on Monday.

BUCKHANNON — The driver of a vehicle that struck a railroad crossing sign on Fifth Street Monday was cited for failure to main control of the vehicle, according to the incident report from the Buckhannon Police Department.

Whitney Allen Hyre, 22, of French Creek, was driving a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee owned by Steven Hyre of French Creek. He was headed south on Fifth Street when he took his eyes off the roadway, according to the report.

The Jeep then veered off the road and collided into a wall made of railroad ties and a railroad signal, causing the signal to fall across the railroad tracks, according to the report.

Hyre reported a possible injury and a passenger in the vehicle, Brittany Hyre, 22, was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital with an incapacitating injury.
