City won’t enforce parts of smoking ban during this year’s Strawberry Festival

Posted: Thursday, May 9th, 2013

BUCKHANNON — “Maybe we went a little too far,” remarked Buckhannon Mayor Kenny Davidson in regard to the smoking ban ordinance that city council passed on April 4.

With that comment, Davidson said Thursday he will direct Buckhannon Police Chief Matt Gregory and his department to not enforce the article of the smoking ban ordinance that prohibits smoking and tobacco use at fairs and festivals during this year’s Strawberry Festival.

Davidson’s comments came after council heard from four people protesting the ordinance, which went through two public readings before being passed last month. During that process, just one person spoke up against the measure, which was unanimously approved by council.

However, Davidson said the inclusion of festival locations, along with electronic cigarettes, may have pushed the smoking ban too far.
