TENNERTON – Six Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs have earned honors on the 2009 North Central Athletic Conference Soccer Team.
Senior forward Marissa Wright, senior midfielder Susie Godwin and senior midielder Danielle Beets were named to the elite 16-player first unit, while junior defender Jessica Hardman, freshman midfielder Emily Godwin and junior forward-midfielder Laura Mason were accorded second-team laurels.
Wright was the leading scorer for coach Tom Hasbrouck’s Lady Bucs, racking up 19 goals and 10 assists. She was a repeat performer on the first squad.
Susie Godwin ranked third on the team in scoring with 10 goals and eight assists.
Beets was one of the main cogs on the defensive end for Buckhannon.
Hardman was a dominant figure on defense that surrendered just 24 goals in their 21 games. She also tallied three goals and dished out two assists.
Emily Godwin, one of four freshmen in a starting role, scored three goals and handed out seven assists.
Mason was runner-up to Wright in scoring, drilling home 16 goals and dealing out 12 assists.
The Lady Bucs compiled a 16-5 record, and were 6-1 in the NCAC. After dropping their opener, Hasbrouck’s girls reeled off 11 straight victories, before falling to George Washington. They ran off three more wins before losing a 1-0 heartbreaker to NCAC champion University.
Buckhannon won its opener in the NCAC Tournament, downing Morgantown by a 2-1 count, but fell to University in the title clash, 5-0.
The Lady Bucs notched a 4-1 triumph over Elkins in the Section 1, Region II tourney opener, but saw their season come to a close when they lost a 3-0 decision in the championship contest to Robert C. Byrd’s Lady Eagles, a team they shut out by a 4-0 margin in the regular season back on Sept. 10.
“It was a great season overall with the usual ups and downs,” remarked Hasbrouck. “I feel it should be a good springboard for what may lie ahead for our Lady Buc soccer program.”
University’s Lady Hawks placed six players on the first team. They were Kaylynn Prtrisin, Hilary Johns, Ashley Collins, Kate Ware, Ashley Ramsey and Hillary DeWitt.
The other first-team choices were Morgantown Lady Mohigan Stepanie Lorenze, Preston Lady Knight Whitney Workman, North Marion Lady Husky MacKenzie Mullenax, East Fairmont Lady Bee Elli Antulove, and Krissy Bodnovich, Sarah Cover and Anna Starkey of Fairmont Senior’s Lady Polar Bears.
