GRAFTON — The Grafton Bearcats may have disrupted the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers’ offense in their Big Ten Conference soccer match Thursday evening, but they could not keep the Bucs out of the win column.
Marty Elliot scored his second goal of the night three minutes into the second half to break a 1-1 halftime tie and he assisted on Marcus Lofton’s insurance goal in the 79th minute to clinch a 3-1 B-U win. Thursday’s victory extended the Bucs’ win streak to four games, giving the team a 10-6-0 overall record, and Elliot upped his team-leading goal total to 12 on the year.
“Our attack went through Marty tonight, as he was able to either get the goal or an assist on every score,” B-U head coach Mike Donato commented after the game. “Grafton played us very fast and physical tonight, which forced us to make quick movement with the ball. For the most part, we did a good job of that.
“There were long stretches of the game where we let Grafton dictate how the ball was going to be played. They kept playing the ball in the air, trying to use their size against us. When we would keep the ball on the ground, we were able to get the ball into the corners and create a lot of chances. The problem was we didn’t do that as much as we should have.”
