ROMNEY — The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers gave up more than 300 yards rushing for the second straight week and suffered their third straight loss on the gridiron Friday in a 40-7 loss to the Hampshire Trojans.

Denard Hartwell ran for 120 yards and the game’s first two scores on seven carries and the host Trojans piled up 394 yards and five rushing touchdowns on 46 attempts. With the loss, the Bucs fell to 1-6 on the season, while Hampshire improved to 4-2 and has won three of their last four games.

Hartwell scored on touchdown runs of 20 and 25 yards in the first five minutes of the game, giving Hampshire a quick 13-0 lead. In between the Hartwell touchdowns, a promising B-U drive that stretched to the Hampshire 32-yard line ended in a fumble, when B-U quarterback Pat Crim ran straight ahead for a first down on a fourth-and-1 sneak, but was stripped of the ball at the end of the play.
