Cutright wins Bucs’ first state title since 2000

STATE PLACE-WINNERS — B-U juniors DAKOTA LINGER, pictured in first photo, and DANIEL NOLTE, pictured in second photo, both won fourth place in their respective weight classes at the 2013 WVSSAC Wrestling Championships. Linger is pictured during his consolation semifinal win over Isaiah Hood in the 126-pound bracket and Nolte is pictured in his consolation semifinal win over Washington’s Ashby Heath in the 220-pound division.

HUNTINGTON — When his opponent in the 152-pound Class AAA state championship match lunged at his legs to attempt a takedown mid-way through the second round, Buckhannon-Upshur junior Seth Cutright knew just what to do to thwart the advance.

Cutright, who had conceded just four points total throughout his four matches at the state tournament, counter-attacked against Ripley’s Preston Martin and scored a takedown of his own. When Martin landed flat on his back on the move, Cutright not only took a 5-2 lead in the match, but also ended the match right then and there.

“We picked neutral position to start the second round and [Martin] got in on a single-leg [takedown attempt], when Seth hit a cutback on him,” B-U head coach J.P. Tenney said of Cutright’s championship match. “He locked up with one hand behind the rear knee and Cutright sent him backward right on his back, and [Martin] screamed.”
