Harvey H. Wetzel

SHAWANO, WIS. — Harvey H. Wetzel, 87, of Shawano, passed away early Thursday morning, Dec. 20, 2012 at Maple Lane Health and Rehabilitation Center in Shawano. He had been a resident there for the past six weeks.

Harvey was born June 22, 1925 in Shawano, a son of the late Henry W. and Clara (Gross) Wetzel. He attended the St James Grade school and later, Shawano High school, graduating in 1943. Following school he entered the United States Navy, where he served as a radio man second class on the LST 752 in the South Pacific Theatre of Operations. Upon returning from the service, Harvey attended the Devry Technical Institute in Chicago, where he studied electronics.

He later attended the Texas A&M University to continue with his studies.

Harvey worked many years in the electronics industry. He was an electronics field rep for the Motorola Company for 20 years before taking a job with E-Systems. He worked for E-Systems for 10 years, before returning to Motorola, retiring in 1990.

On Nov. 17, 1961 he was united in marriage to the former Barbara A. Hockenberry in Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y.

The couple had the ability to travel extensively with Harvey’s Job and lived throughout the United States including, Arizona, Texas, California, New Jersey and New York. They also lived abroad for many years, living throughout Europe, Korea and Australia where they resided for seven years.

After retiring, the couple moved back to the house where Harvey was born in Shawano.

The couple attended the Shawano United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Shawano Area Veterans, Shawano American Legion Post 117 and Shawano V. F.W. Post 2723 where he served as commander for three years.

He was also a member of the Wisconsin LST association. Along with his veterans activities that he was involved with, Harvey was an avid Bowler.

Survivors include his wife-Barbara of Shawano, one son-Craig (Lisa) Wetzel of Las Vegas, Nev. Harvey was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn Nohr in 1991.

Funeral services for Harvey H. Wetzel were held on Sunday, Dec. 23 at 3 p.m. at Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano. Pastor Domnik Israel will officiate. Military rites were conducted at the funeral home on Sunday. Private family interment will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery of Shawano.

Relatives and friends were received at Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Service on Sunday after 1:30 p.m. until the hour of service.
