MIDLAND, Mich. — Elizabeth Ann (Stathers) “Betty Ann” Crummett, 89, of Midland, Mich. died early Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at Cascades Senior Living in Midland. She was born April 7, 1924 in Buckhannon, W.Va., daughter of the late Allan J. and Viva (Casto) Crummett. Most of her ancestors came from England, Germany, France, Wales and Ireland before the American Revolutionary War.
Buckhannon was the home of West Virginia Wesleyan College, the alma mater of both her parents, aunts, uncles and many cousins. It became her alma mater in 1945 as she graduated from with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
She met her husband, Warren B. Crummett in 1947 on the campus of Ohio State University where she had gone for graduate studies. They later married Feb. 28, 1948 in Buckhannon and moved to Columbus where Mr. Crummett received his doctoral degree in 1951. After he received his degree the couple moved to Midland so Dr. Crummett could do research for the Dow Chemical Company. Elizabeth’s professional life began in Parkersburg, W.Va. where she taught Home Economics and English in a large intermediate school for two years.
She later held teaching positions in Ashville, Ohio, the Ohio School for the Blind in Columbus and then Central Intermediate School in Midland. She retired to raise her sons but continued to substitute teach for many years. Mrs. Crummett was a member of the Church of the Brethren, the First United Methodist Church for many years and participated in many clubs and organizations including; the P.E.O., Midland Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames of America.
Surviving besides her husband Warren, are her two sons, Dr. Daniel (Bobbi Price) Crummett, a physician in family practice with Duke University Health Systems in Chapel Hill, N.C.; and Dr. Allan W. (Carrie Ann) Crummett, a licensed psychologist in Muskegon, Mich.; five grandchildren, Warren Luke and Autumn Leah Crummett of Muskegon; Hannah Elizabeth Crummett of Boston, Mass.; Carriane Stathers Crummett of New York; and Samuel Christopher Crummett of Chapel Hill, N.C.
On a personal note, Elizabeth (Betty Ann) was a very astute Christian woman with high principles who was liked by many. As a family we adored her beyond measure. She was the Matriarch of the highest caliber and we dearly loved her.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2013 from the First United Methodist Church in Midland. Rev. Art Smith will officiate with committal services to follow in the Midland City Cemetery. Mrs. Crummett’s family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler St. in Midland on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until services.
