WESTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers gave up 325 yards rushing and 408 yards total offense, while covering just 184 yards total offense of their own, Friday in a 48-6 loss to the Lewis County Minutemen.

Lewis County running back Caleb Butcher ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns, including two touchdown runs of longer than 40 yards, as the Minutemen defeated the Bucs for the third straight season. B-U fell to 1-5 on the season with the loss Friday, while the Minutemen improved to 4-2.

“We did have a lot of young players who were in their first experience there, and they played as such,” B-U head coach Bill Struble remarked after a game in which his team started just six of their 11 opening-day starters on offense and five opening-day starters on defense.

“We stopped them a couple times. I think their fullback game hurt us more than their perimeter game. I felt like we did make some plays on the perimeter now and then, but we felt inside we weren’t getting it done.”

B-U running back Seth Cutright carried the load for the Bucs offensively, rushing 20 times for 113 yards and a touchdown and catching three Pat Crim passes for 40 yards. Cutright reached the 100-yard rushing mark for the fifth time this season through six games and remains on pace for a 1,000-yard rushing season with 642 rushing yards.

“It’s a team game; it’s not an individual game,” Struble said. “I played line in college and high school, and I was aware of how much my backs had. I don’t think the coaches need to make a big emphasis of that; I think we’ve got to make an emphasis on correctly blocking, our assignments and being able to move the ball as a team.”

Lewis County jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead on their first two drives of the game, as Butcher ran through a big hole up the middle for a 44-yard touchdown on the game’s opening drive and Mark Metzgar capped a nine-play, 77-yard drive on the next Lewis County possession with a 1-yard touchdown plunge.

Chris Santalucia added the extra point after both scores and went 6-for-7 on point-after attempts on the night.

B-U answered quickly with a touchdown drive of their own, with Cutright breaking loose for a 44-yard touchdown run on the third play of a 65-yard drive. Freshman Bryson Fluke’s extra-point kick struck off the right upright, keeping the Lewis County lead at 14-6.

On the ensuing Lewis County possession, the B-U defense had a chance to regain the ball when defensive lineman Nick Burch forced a fumble on a Metzgar carry up the middle, but Lewis County’s Chris Gum jumped on the loose ball at the B-U 9-yard line. A play later, Butcher scampered into the end zone, completing a nine-play, 55-yard drive and widening the lead to 21-6.

“It was a missed opportunity,” Struble said of the fumble. “It would have been nice to get the ball and get another score up there, but we didn’t do it.”

Lewis County tacked on one more touchdown before halftime, taking possession after a Fluke punt at the B-U 49-yard line with 2:43 left in the first half. After the Bucs held Gum to a yard on a first-down carry, Butcher made a back-breaking 48-yard touchdown run to increase the Lewis County lead to 27-6 going into the intermission.

Lewis County forced a turnover on downs at their own 18-yard line to end the Bucs’ opening drive of the second half, and two plays later, the Minutemen ran their longest play from scrimmage on the evening.

On second-and-11 from the 17-yard line, Lewis County quarterback Braden Montgomery threw across the middle to a wide-open Dustin Martin on a play-action pass for an 83-yard touchdown and a 34-6 lead.

Lewis County scored on their next two drives to wrap up the scoring, with Montgomery sprinting into the end zone from 3 yards out to wrap up a three-play touchdown drive and Ryan Carson rumbling for a 38-yard run up the middle.

Burch and Austin Wyckoff led the B-U defense with 5 ½ tackles apiece and Burch made two tackles for loss.

The Bucs travel to Romney this Friday to face the 3-2 Hampshire Trojans, who saw a two-game win streak come to an end last Friday in a 12-7 loss to Keyser.
