Storm claims life in Upshur County

Posted: Sunday, Nov 4th, 2012

Katlin Houston, Nikki Gregory, Caleb Hoschar, Chelsey Isner and Tristen Tenney have a snowball fight on Randolph Street Wednesday afternoon. Upshur County Schools remain closed today as snowstorm recovery efforts continue.

BUCKHANNON — The fall snowstorm that has left thousands without power and dumped up to two feet of snow in part of the county claimed the life of one man who apparently died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Mark Riffle, 51, of Arlington, went to his garage to refuel the generator and did not return, according to Upshur County Sheriff Virgil Miller.

Riffle’s wife, Darlene, went to check on Riffle and found him unresponsive. Riffle’s son then drove him to the Y at Rock Cave, where they met Upshur County EMS.

Riffle was later pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

The recovery from the storm continued Thursday afternoon as Sen. Joe Manchin III, D-W.Va., and Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin continued a statewide tour by making a stop in Upshur County.
