BUCKHANNON — The University of Charleston Golden Eagles built a 14-3 halftime lead and squeezed the air out of the football in the second half Saturday, defeating the host West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats 28-23 in a WVIAC football matchup.

The Golden Eagles’ ground game rumbled to 184 yards rushing and three touchdowns on the ground on a cold, muddy day at Cebe Ross Field. The Bobcat defense held Charleston running back Jordan Roberts, the league’s leading rusher, to just 61 yards on 21 carries, but Darrel Byrd ran three times for 77 yards and two touchdowns and made a reception for 75 yards.

Charleston entered the game ranked first in the WVIAC in total offense, at 387.2 yards per game, and rushing offense, with 2,104 yards rushing on the season — averaging 233.8 yards per game on the ground — and 18 rushing touchdowns.
