County won’t pay employees who missed work

Posted: Monday, Nov 12th, 2012

BUCKHANNON — Upshur County employees who did not or could not report to work last week will be asked to use an annual leave day or not get paid.

The Upshur County Commission voted on the matter Thursday, Nov. 1 and notified all county employees by email last Friday.

Confusion stemming from an erroneous message that ran on a local TV station saying the Upshur County Courthouse was closed on Tuesday, Oct. 30 led to approximately a dozen employees not coming into work.

Magistrate and circuit court were closed Tuesday, but the courthouse remained open for other business. The message about the courtroom closures was communicated to media outlets by the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals.

County Administrator William Parker said after learning about the wrong announcement on the local news, he immediately contacted the other commissioners and then called the TV station. However, Parker said the message was not corrected by Tuesday morning.
