BUCKHANNON — The city and county declared Monday “James C. Kittle Day” to honor a local World War II veteran who has spent almost 66 years honoring fallen veterans from Upshur County.
Jimmie Kittle said that he served in the army from 1944 to 1946 and upon returning home, joined with eight other veterans in starting the honor guard to perform full military funerals for local veterans.
He’s provided services for more than 3,500 veterans since, according to the city and county proclamation read aloud at a Veterans Day ceremony at the VFW on Monday.
“It’s an honor to do it,” he said.
