TENNERTON — Thomas “Tom” Joe Long, 80, of the Gaines Community, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg. He was born in Upshur County on March 6, 1932, a son of the late Joe A. and Ruth Hamner Long. On Aug. 30, 1952, he was united in marriage to Naomi C. “Peg” Heater Long, who preceded him in death on Dec. 27, 2005.
He is survived by one daughter Dianne Long of Beaver Falls, Pa.; one son Burlin R. Long and wife Kim of Rochester, Pa.; two grandchildren: Andrea and husband Brandon Daniels and Amanda Radaker; four sisters: Martha and husband Richard Leuszler of Amherst, Ohio, Barbara and husband Larry Ferren of Shinnston, Rita and husband Carl Watson of Walkersville, and Caroline Long of Buckhannon; four brothers: Dale Long of Gaines, John Long and wife Cheryl of Gaines, Basil Long of Gaines, and Donald Long and wife Martha of Arlington; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister Ellen Jean Bennett and three brothers: Andrew Dixon Long, Burl Long and Davis Ross Long.
Mr. Long was a member of the Rochester Lodge No. 0229 A.F. & A.M and the Salem Ridge United Methodist Church. He served in the Pittsburgh International Guard. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean War. He retired as a General Foreman from ARMCO Steel in Ambridge, Pa. with 36 years of service.
Tom liked the outdoors, and had many beagles named “Mike.” He enjoyed piloting airplanes and will be sadly missed by family and friends.
The family will receive friends today, Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, from 3-7 p.m., at the Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel. The body will lie in state on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, from 10-11 a.m., the funeral hour, at the Salem Ridge United Methodist Church with Pastor David Jessie officiating. Interment will follow in the Salem Ridge Cemetery where the Buckhannon VFW Post 3663, the Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion and the DAV Chapters 5 and 36 will conduct military honors.
