FRENCH CREEK — Third grade students at French Creek Elementary are learning about giving back to others through a special social studies unit.
Teachers Christy Gaudet and Jessica McQuain are working together on the unit which will wrap up at the end of this week.
“We have new Next Generation Content Standards for Social Studies,” Gaudet said.
“This was part of the standards to learn about community service and giving back to the community.”
The students first brainstormed different problems in their school or community and then came up with projects to help solve the problem.
Some students wanted to address bullying, so they came up with a way to expand the school’s annual Golden Rule Day, according to Gaudet.
Other students were making ornaments for nursing homes and St. Joe’s.
Yet another group of students were collecting loose change to help the nearby West Virginia Wildlife Center, which suffered severe damage from the snowstorm caused by Hurricane Sandy.
