CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — Three Buckhannon-Upshur wrestlers earned runner-up honors last weekend at the Christiansburg (Va.) Big Blue Tournament, leading the Bucs to an eighth-place team finish among a who’s who of scholastic teams from Virginia and West Virginia.
B-U juniors Dakota Linger, Seth Cutright and Daniel Nolte all went 3-1 and reached the finals of their respective weight classes before falling in the championship round. The Bucs compiled a team score of 115 ½ points, while seventh-ranked Class AAA team — the Parkersburg Big Red, turned in a winning score of 183.
The second- through sixth-place positions at the tournament were all occupied by teams ranked among Virginia’s top 15 scholastic squads, according to the most recent Virginiawrestling.com poll. The host squad from Christiansburg finished a close second behind Parkersburg with 179 ½ points and Eastern View, Liberty Christian, Franklin County and St. Christopher’s came in third through sixth, respectively. Patrick Henry (Va.) finished one spot ahead of B-U in seventh place, scoring 121 points.
