Good Times Radio Show

Posted: Thursday, Jan 24th, 2013

Students in Debbie Weese and Megan Bacorn’s fifth-grade classes at Union Elementary hosted “The People, Places and Good Times Radio Show” an old-fashioned radio show Friday as part of a two-week long unit.

BUCKHANNON — Bringing back memories from the Golden Age of Radio, Union Elementary School fifth-graders invited the public Friday for a taping of their live radio show.

The Golden Age of Radio is generally thought of to run from the 1920s to 1955, but especially in the 1930s and 1940s, according to Ilene Evans, artistic director of Voices From the Earth.

During those decades, there was one show after another with soap operas during the day for the housewives and then news and other programs in the evenings for families.

Over a two-week span, Ivans worked with third, fourth and fifth-grade students to preserve oral history by collecting memories from Upshur County elders. Some of those were incorporated into the feature presentation Friday, “The People, Places and Good Times Radio Show.”
