WESTON — Herschel Lewis Cottrell, 84, of Weston, went to be with his Heavenly Father, Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 in Elkins, following an extended illness.
He was born Aug. 18, 1928 in Oka, a son of the late Hobert Lee Cottrell and Ada Belle Duffield Cottrell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mildred Susan Rader Cottrell on Aug. 29, 2002; and one sister, Janice Cottrell.
He is survived by his children, Karen Cottrell Vanoster of Parkersburg, Christina Cottrell Hopkins and husband Orvin of Flatwoods, Marta Cottrell Ware and husband Robert of Flatwoods, Robert Cottrell and wife Cecelia of Nutter Fort and Patti Cottrell Anderson and husband Robert of Franklin; grandchildren, Candace Cottrell of Morgantown, Naomi Haines of Slanesville, Bethany Johns of Silver Spring, Md., Matthew Ware of Mt. Clare, Charles Hopkins of Flatwoods, Shannon Hopkins of Flatwoods and Sonya Hatlett of Moultrie, Ga.; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lowell Cottrell and wife Lena of Spencer; and four sisters, Mary Nichols of Uniontown, Ohio, Hazel Gandee of Spencer, Linda Liss of Dunbar and Brenda Dorsey and husband Bud of Littleton.
He was a retired United Methodist pastor with 33 years of service.
Herschel was a veteran, having served in the United States Army.
He was a loving husband, father and devout Christian.
Friends were received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013 at Boyle Funeral Home, 322 Main Avenue, Weston.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 at St. Matthew United Methodist Church with Rev. Joseph Shreve officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Weston.
