County looks at police cruiser policy

Posted: Tuesday, Feb 19th, 2013

BUCKHANNON — Someone spotted an Upshur County sheriff’s deputy driving his police vehicle with a civilian on board at the beginning of last week and reported that to the Upshur County Commission office.

On Thursday, sheriff David Coffman told the commission that county administrator William Parker had brought the issue to his attention.

“I think this issue has been going on for a period of time,” Coffman said. “I think it was a concern before I ever came on board. I believe I understand the liability concerns that the commission has. I want to work with the commission to make this policy work for everyone, but I will say that under our policies and procedures, that if someone out here, a citizen has a complaint to file against one of my officers, the protocol is that person must come forward.”
