Woman encourages teens to drive safely

TENNERTON — Surveying the class of juniors and seniors sitting in the auditorium, the guest speaker admitted she was a little nervous returning to Buckhannon-Upshur High School.

Four years ago, Cara Filler spoke to an audience that was still dealing with the aftermath of the death of four high school and college students killed following a drunk driving accident on March 15, 2008.

“I’ve done some tough assemblies,” she said. “But the hardest assembly I have ever done is yours. In four countries, it is the hardest assembly I have ever done. I have talked about your school every day since I did that assembly.”

“Their assembly that day should have been proudly sponsored by Kleenex. Everybody sobbed. The students, the staff, the speaker. We got through it together.”

There was a male student that waited after that presentation until everyone had left the auditorium.

“All I wanted to do was take his pain away and I couldn’t,” Filler said. “He was fidgeting with a bracelet on his wrist — one of those rubber bracelets the color of your school.
