NORWALK, OHIO — Robert L. Dean, 86, of Norwalk, Ohio, died Wednesday morning, February 20, 2013 in his home after a lengthy battle with cancer. Robert L. Dean was born December 30, 1926 in Buckhannon, W.Va., in Upshur County. He is the son of the late Doness and Ruby Dean.
Bob is survived by his wife, Rita M. Dean, by his daughters and sons in law, Barbara and Erv Powell of New Washington, Ohio and Diane and Allan Eckstein of Salt Lake City, Utah, by his sons and daughters in law, Kenneth and Lori Dean of Johnston, Ohio and Rodney and Maggie Dean of Galion, Ohio, and by his brother, Russell Dean of Bolivar, Ohio. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, three step great-grandchildren, and by his step children, Tammy Hipp of Norwalk, Ohio, John Kerper of Norwalk, Ohio, and Paula Kerper of Milan, Ohio. Bob was preceded in death by two brothers. He served in the U.S. Navy from 2-28-1944 to 7-13-1946 and was stationed at the Naval Air Station, New Orleans, La. Bob was honorably discharged with the Victory Ribbon and the American Area Ribbon. He was a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College of Buckannon, West Virginia, The Ohio State University of Columbus, Ohio, and Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. His teaching certificates were in chemistry, physics, mathematics and school administration.
Bob taught four years at Cowen High School, Webster County, W.Va. five years at Tiro Consolidated School, Tiro, Ohio, where he served three years as a teacher/principal and superintendent, eight years at Buckeye Central High School, New Washington, Ohio as a principal and superintendent, then moved to Norwalk, Ohio where he served four years as an elementary principal and the balance of this career as assistant superintendent.
After retirement, he attended Massotherapy School and graduated in 1991. He had his own massotherapy business until he retired in 2002. Bob loved wood working, gardening, canning, cooking and baking and being outdoors. Bob was very active in the Norwalk Eagles 711, spanning 37 years, having held many offices including club president.
Friends may call on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013 from 2 to 5 p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main St., Norwalk, Ohio. Friends may also call on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 10:30 a.m. in the Norwalk First United Methodist Church, 60 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Rev. Gary Streiff will officiate. Entombment will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Bogart Road, Huron, Ohio.
