BUCKHANNON — The Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department wants to remind everyone of how serious varicella, better known as the chickenpox virus, can be to children and teenagers.
The reminder comes after several cases of chickenpox were reported at schools across the county during the month of February.
“We have had up to 10 or 11 cases reported,” said Dr. Joseph Reed, medical director of the health department. “Anytime we get a number of reports that high, the state health department encourages us to send out a reminder for people and encourage them to get the chickenpox vaccination if they haven’t done so already.”
Reed said the reports of chickenpox locally are the highest he has seen in years.
