Posted: Tuesday, Mar 26th, 2013

Retirees from Upshur County School’s transportation department were honored Thursday. Left to right are bus driver Gene Hornbeck, director Sherry Dean, and drivers Phil Ward and Rick Cutright.

TENNERTON — In the next few months, Upshur County Schools is losing a combined 88 years of service from the transportation department as four long-time employees say goodbye.

The first of those is coming up this week as Rick Cutright, driver of bus 54, parks his bus for the last time Friday, March 29. Cutright said he started subbing as a bus driver in 1996 and became a full-time driver in 1998.

Cutright said he pastors two churches including one in Buckhannon and is looking forward to having more time for “God’s work.” Cutright also said he expected he would have more time for his “honey-do jobs” around the house.

Phil Ward, driver of bus 58, is retiring at the end of the month as well after 25 years.

Ward said he would miss the kids the most but is looking forward to relaxing.

Gene Hornbeck, driver of bus 43, will end his 15-year career April 22.

Hornbeck said, “I will miss everyone — all the kids and all the people I worked with. I’m looking forward to doing what I want to do though.”
