BUCKHANNON — The West Virginia Department of Education is being repurposed, according to the state superintendent of schools.

Dr. James Phares, the 28th state superintendent of schools for West Virginia, is making a visit to all 55 counties as he begins his tenure at the top of the state’s education system.

“There’s a different attitude — an attitude of service,” he said. “We want to get away from telling people what to do and how to do it. What we are providing is a lot more flexibility to local boards.”

Phares said two examples are hiring practices and the school calendar, although the latter is not quite where Phares wants it to be yet.

Another change is that professional development funding is going straight to the counties this year and next year, he added.

“We feel the decisions on how students need to be trained and what they need to be trained on is best decided at the local level,” Phares said.
