Students create mock scene showing horrible effects of drinking and driving

B-UHS students, from left, Shelby Williams, Lizzy Edwards, Hannah Stankus and Sebastian Reger act out the immediate aftermath of a mock wreck caused by drinking and driving on the night of prom. The B-U senior class witnessed the elaborate drill Thursday afternoon.

BUCKHANNON — According to the latest figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one person every 51 minutes dies at the hands of a drunk driver.

With the Buckhannon-Upshur High School prom scheduled for Saturday night, school officials wanted to make sure students do not become part of that statistic.

The high school, through the efforts of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), organized a DUI mock crash on the driver education course at the high school Thursday afternoon.

Local police officers, firefighters and first responders along with a HealthNet helicopter took part in the staged accident.

“We set up the reenactment of an accident of students coming home from a prom,” said Vickey Casto, adviser to the SADD/UCARE club. “The person that caused the accident is a student that was driving under the influence and she hit another car of students that were simply returning home from the prom.”
