Posted: Tuesday, Jun 11th, 2013

The Upshur Civil War Company C Militia Memorial Highway was dedicated Saturday in Rock Cave. Pictured, left to right, are Del. Bill Hamilton, R-Upshur; descendants of some of the militia members Joey Wilson, French Armstrong and Cathy Harris; Larry Brown, commander of the VFW Post 3663; Susie Bender and Dora Neely, who dressed in historical costumes of the period; and Matt Gillespie, representing the West Virginia Re-enactors Association and Company A of the 1st/West Virginia Infantry.

BUCKHANNON It was a crisp September morning in 1863 in Centerville, W.Va. when members of the Upshur County 133rd Militia State Troops arrived for their weekly drill. But the drill would quickly turn sinister as members of the Confederate Army surrounded the unarmed militia, which was forced to surrender and then march south.

Out of the original 70 militia members, many died along the way and 43 perished in southern prisons by the end of the Civil War.
