BUCKHANNON — Local citizens gathered at the Upshur County Courthouse Thursday morning to celebrate West Virginia’ sesquicentennial birthday.

The Upshur County Republican Executive Committee and the Central West Virginia Republican Women hosted a birthday party as the Mountain State turned 150.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance and a rendition of the National Anthem by Cpl. Rocky Hebb of the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department, citizens heard from guest speaker Commission President Donnie Tenney.

Tenney joked that it was easier to celebrate the sesquicentennial than to say it.

“One hundred and fifty years as a state is quite an accomplishment,” Tenney said. “West Virginia is one of the greatest states in the nation. The people of West Virginia are what makes this state great.”
