Wildlife Center celebrates West Virginia’s 150th birthday

FRENCH CREEK — For its second annual West Virginia Day celebration, the West Virginia Wildlife Center focused on a unique aspect of Civil War history — the Irish-Americans who joined the fight.

Gene Thorn, wildlife biologist in charge of the center, said that many Irish soldiers fought on both sides of the Civil War.

“They got enlisted basically when they got off the boat,” he said.

The Irish soldiers brought their own customs and traditions, including Irish music, to the battlefields.
