TENNERTON  —  Under new direction and with both new and returning actors, the curtain went up Monday on the 2013-2014 school year for Upshur County Schools.

First-year superintendent Roy Wager said he had once heard teachers compared to actors.

“We must perform for the students daily — even if we are having a bad day,” he said. “The moment they arrive in our classroom, it is showtime.”

Students will arrive Thursday for the first day school, but employees gathered for the opening convocation Monday morning in the Buckhannon-Upshur High School auditorium that is undergoing some renovations.

The old auditorium seating has been removed in preparation for new seating and carpeting, which should be installed by the end of September, according to Wager.

County maintenance staff brought in folding chairs for the convocation, which welcomed faculty and staff for the start of the new school year.

Wager, who retired as director of federal programs in December 2012 and was hired in June as the new superintendent, commented on his short retirement. He said he was glad to come back and see many friends but also some new faces in the crowd.

“I hope you like the new auditorium,” he joked.
