CLARKSBURG — The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buccaneers opened the 2013 volleyball season Thursday with a split of a tri-match against Big Ten Conference opponents, including a match their coach “would compare to some sort of championship match — whether sectionals, regionals or states.”
Coach Sheena Westfall said her Lady Bucs’ two-set sweep of the Preston Lady Knights in their opening match of the evening was “not a very impressive win,” despite the B-U girls’ comfortable margins in both sets, 25-14 and 25-17. However, their three-set match against the host Robert C. Byrd Lady Eagles “turned into a great match,” with the last two of the three sets decided by the minimum two points.
RCB won the opening set by four points, 25-21, but B-U extended the match with a 25-23 win in the second set. The host Lady Eagles won the third and final set, 26-24.
