BUCKHANNON — A mysterious substance found in the Buckhannon River over the weekend was caused by a transformer leaking near the river.
The transformer, owned by West Virginia Wesleyan College, leaked an unknown amount of coolant into the river, according to Kathy Cosco, communications director with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection agency.
The leakage occurred into the river near the Buckhannon dam on Island Avenue.
Despite the leak, there appeared to be no issues with the city’s drinking water or any health concerns over the contaminants in the river.
