Man faces charge of attempting to operate drug lab

Posted: Thursday, Oct 10th, 2013

BUCKHANNON — A man was arrested for attempting to operate a clandestine lab after sheriff’s deputies discovered materials used to make methamphetamine in his vehicle Saturday.

Deputy J.M. Kennedy with the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department was patrolling Pringle Tree Park after midnight Saturday when he noticed a truck parked by the boating dock over the hill.

Kennedy approached the driver, Jamie Sothen, 22, of Volga, and allegedly smelled an odor resembling burnt marijuana, according to the criminal complaint in the Upshur County Magistrate Clerk’s office.

Sothen told Kennedy he was trying to sleep and was having car trouble. Kennedy frisked Sothen for officer safety reasons and did not find any weapons, but Sothen was unable to provide a valid driver’s license.

When Cpl. Jason Queen arrived to assist Kennedy, Sothen allegedly admitted to having a pipe and several needles in his car which were collected as evidence and gave officers probable cause to search the vehicle further, according to the criminal complaint.
