TENNERTON — William J. “Bill” Shields, 72, of Shawnee Drive, Buckhannon, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon. He was born on Sept. 21, 1941, in Braxton County, a son of the late Hoye and Matilda Shaver Shields. On Feb. 19, 1966, he was united in marriage to Helen Smith Shields, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons: Kenneth Shields and wife Renee of Buckhannon and Bradley Shields and wife Dana of Bridgewater, Va.; one grandson Braden Shields; two sisters: Viola Marie “Nancy” Ruby of Murray, Ky. and Glenna May Pauley of New Brunswick, Canada; and three brothers: Melvin Shields of Weston, John Shields of Weston, and Don Shields of Flatwoods. He was preceded in death by one sister Mary and four brothers: Roy, Clyde, Glen and Grant “Jimmie” Shields.
Mr. Shields was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Vietnam War. He was a former employee of Moore Business Forms with 30 years of service. He was later employed by the Stonewall Jackson Lake Marina. He was a member of the NRA and enjoyed bluegrass music, gardening, feeding the birds, and spending time with his family. He was an avid outdoorsman and liked to hunt and fish. He was a fan of the WVU Mountaineers and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, from 5-8 p.m., at the Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel. The funeral will be held on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the funeral chapel with Pastor Tim Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the Heaters Cemetery where the Lewis County Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
