Modified: Tuesday, Nov 26th, 2013

World War II veteran Jim Stump poses with seven descendants who are teaching or attending Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School:, Sydney Maxwell, Amy Hatfield, Taylor Whitehair, Logan Whitehair, Jordan Cutright, Autumn Hatfield and Tyler Cutright.

BUCKHANNON — Just two years before he was killed, John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, spoke about the sacrifices of those who fought to protect our freedom during a Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.

“Fifty-two years ago, President Kennedy spoke those words,” Les Shreve, commander of the American Legion Post 7, said Friday at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School. “They are still true today.”

Friday also marked the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Kennedy, who was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

“What a tragedy,” Shreve said. “This was so devastating to our nation that it made an imprint on my generation. Most of us can tell you exactly what we were doing, where we were at, who we were with.”

“We can tell you every detail of our personal life at that moment,” he said. “The whole nation wept. Some of you may have those same impressions of Sept. 11, 2001.

“Here today are veterans representing most branches of the services,” he said. “I thank them for their service.”
