JANE LEW — Joseph Harold Merrifield Sr., 63, of Buckhannon passed away at 7:54 p.m. on Thursday March 27, 2014 in the United Hospital Center in Bridgeport following a courageous journey with cancer.
He was born in New Martinsville on June 19, 1950 a son of the late Robert Harold Merrifield who passed away on Aug. 19, 1992 and Loretta Kathleen Connaway Merrifield who passed away on July 7, 2013.
His strength, integrity and witty sense of humor will be carried on by his only son, Joseph Merrifield Jr. who resides in Buckhannon; one grandson, Caleb Beckner of Elkins, one great-grandson, Sam Beckner of Buckhannon; four brothers: David Albright and wife Terri of Pontiac, Ill., Ronald Albright and Terry Merrifield, both of Martins Ferry, Ohio, and Randy Merrifield and husband Louis Slowek of Columbus, Ohio; and special friend, Donna Brown of Buckhannon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Merrifield who passed away on Oct. 29, 1992.
Joe worked as a long haul truck driver most of his life, employed by various trucking companies, including JB Hunt, Perfetti and Coastal, where he enjoyed traveling the scenic byways of the United States. He was an honored veteran of both the United Sates Army and The United States Marine Corps, of which he was very proud. He’s gone to meet his hero, Chesty Puller, a legendary Marine who was one of the most decorated officers in history. Oorah!
He was a sports enthusiast who loved to watch football, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Nascar racing, always cheering for Tony Stewart to take the checkered flag. He enjoyed reading American History and catfishing with his son.
Joe’s request for cremation has been honored and his family will have a private celebration of life service at a later date with burial at Cameron Cemetery in Cameron, Ohio. Expressions of sympathy may be sent directly to the family c/o Joe Merrifield at 1959 Sauls Run Rd. Buckhannon WV 26201.
