BOE presents Upshur Stars to state qualifying athletes

TENNERTON — At the Upshur County Board of Education meeting Tuesday, scholar athletes were recognized for their achievements and given Upshur Stars Awards.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Debra Harrison invited Director of Wellness and Child Nutrition Mr. Eddie Vincent to welcome the teams to the podium. Buckhannon-Upshur High School Head Wrestling Coach Jacob Orr was recognized, alongside Assistant Coaches Levi Bender and Craig Wallace. Recognized next were the students who competed at the WVSSAC state wrestling meet this past weekend, which include: Nathan Tyson, Ian Cornett, Liam Garcia, Aidan Wilson, Brodie Kennedy, Andrew McDowell, Nathan Cornett, Luke Bohnsack, Trevor Randolph and Oscar Blonn. The boys were presented with Upshur Stars and spoken very highly of for their efforts and achievements in becoming State Qualifiers.

“The group of parents that we have along with the kids is more like a family than a sports team,” Coach Orr said.

The Buckhannon-Upshur swim team was also recognized and given Upshur Stars, including Head Coach Michael Roessing, Assistant Coaches Brittany and Will Squires, and the following swimmers: Girl State Qualifiers Lillian Fetty, Riley Vincent, Cadence Vincent, Alayna Whitehair and Cameron Zuliani, as well as Boy State Qualifiers Owen Caynor, Reis Leonard, Parker Bennett and Carter Zuliani.

“The main reason we are here is because of the scholar athletes. All these students have at least a 3.0 GPA and there are two of them with a 3.5 GPA,” said Coach Roessing.

The boys team placed fifth overall for state while the girls team placed third overall.
