Buckhannon-Upshur Class of 2022 celebrates 135th Commencement

BUCKHANNON — Buckhannon-Upshur High School (B-UHS) celebrated the graduating class of 2022 at the 135th Annual Commencement held at the West Virginia Wesleyan College gymnasium on Friday, May 27 at 6 p.m. The event was live streamed via the Buckhannon-Upshur High School Facebook page, Channel 3 and the Channel 3’s YouTube page.

As everyone was gathering and taking their seats, the B-UHS choir was serenading those in attendance. Blue and white caps and gowns were seen lining up in the halls just outside the gymnasium. There was an overall feeling of joy and accomplishment in the air.

Principal Jonathan Pollock then started with an introduction, followed by the B-U Band providing the music from Pomp and Circumstance to which the graduating class of 2022 began entering the gymnasium and standing along rows of white chairs. All in attendance were also standing to honor the graduates. In customary fashion the men were donned in blue while the ladies were donned in white. Principal Pollock then presented the graduates for the year 2022. The B-UHS Soundwaves then performed the National Anthem.

Principal Pollock then spoke to the graduating class, “ We are getting ready to release you into the wild and there is a lot of stuff out there and you’re gonna have to trust in yourself and your loved ones. I will give you one piece of advice and that is that you want to let your heart guide you.”

Senior Caden Andrick then took to the stage and spoke of success stating to his fellow graduates “ Go out there, be bold and pursue your dreams.”  Fellow Senior Kaitlyn Shannon also spoke and stated, “ I know our futures will be bright and we have time. We only get one life. Make your life memorable. Find your happiness…”

Finally, the moment that the class of 2022 had long awaited had arrived. Students were called to the stage and presented with diplomas, marking the official end of their high school career.

The ceremony concluded with remarks from Senior Class President Amelia “Katie” Pearson. “Now is your time. Strive to be the reason someone has a good day. You are defined by the kind of person you are. Set goals and achieve them. It doesn’t matter who is proud of you, as long as you are proud of yourself. Make yourself significant,” said Pearson.

And just like that, the Buckhannon-Upshur High School Class of 2022 tossed their caps and are prepared to take the next steps on their individual journeys.
