Fire at abandoned home under investigation

BUCKHANNON — On Sunday, February 27, at 7 p.m., Upshur County Comm Center received a call regarding a structure fire at 795 Swamp Run Road. Buckhannon Fire Department, Ellamore Volunteer Fire Department and Warren District Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call.

The responding departments were able to extinguish the original fire. However, at approximately 5 p.m. on Monday, February 28, another call came in, as the fire had rekindled. Buckhannon Fire Department and Ellamore Fire Department arrived on scene and quenched the area, ensuring that the possibility of another rekindling was less likely.

Among the damage was a gutted home and a destroyed vehicle nearby. The immediate area and vegetation surrounding the home was also destroyed.

Ellamore Fire Chief Jon Wilt stated, “It is an abandoned home. There were no utilities to it. Currently, the cause is undetermined and is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.” Wilt also noted there were no injuries reported during either call.
