WESTON — The Lady Buccaneers cheer squad traveled to neighboring Lewis County for the Big 10 Conference competition on Tuesday night. The Lady Bucs were joined in Weston by cheer squads representing Bridgeport, East Fairmont, Elkins, Fairmont Senior, Grafton, Lincoln, North Marion, Philip Barbour, Preston, and Robert C. Byrd high schools.
The hosting team, Lewis County was a last-minute scratch from the competition due to an injury sustained in practice. Liberty also did not participate in the conference competition.
The Lady Bucs turned in a dazzling, high-energy routine, despite having one of their flyers fall during a stunt. Aside from that mishap, the Lady Bucs looked sharp with crisp timing on their routine. The Lady Bucs cheer squad deserves praise for keeping their composure and not letting one mistake derail an otherwise strong routine. Due to that one hiccup in their routine, the Lady Bucs failed to break into the top two. Buckhannon-Upshur High School’s performance in the Big 10 competition shows how little margin of error there is in the sport of cheerleading.
In the end, Bridgeport ran away with this competition, delivering an almost flawless routine to claim the conference crown. Fairmont Senior could have possibly beaten Bridgeport out, but much like the Lady Bucs, had a flyer fall while pulling a stunt, and came in as runner-up.
Overall, in the last week, the Lady Bucs have had two solid showings in two of the biggest dates on the cheerleading season calendar. The Lady Bucs cheer squad will look to carry the momentum they generated from their last two solid competition showings into the next competition season as they chase an appearance in the state competition.
