Pitmasters compete in BBQ Bash

ROANOKE — Almost Heaven BBQ Bash was held at Stonewall Resort over the Father’s Day weekend, ending with cash prizes, trophies and bragging rights.

The Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned competition normally hosts over 50 of the best teams from 20 states in a 4-meat competition, along with a Backyard BBQ Contest and Steak Grillin’ Contest on Friday evening. Chicken, pork, ribs, even turkey and more were included in this year’s barbecue competition. Almost Heaven BBQ Bash showcased some of the best barbecue cooks from across the country at the resort. It serves as the WV State BBQ Championship, qualifying the WV Grand Champion for a potential entry into the prestigious Jack Daniels Worldwide Invitational BBQ Tournament, as well as the American Royal BBQ Competition.

There was a variety of fun for families that included inflatables, face paintings, balloon sculptures, contests, and games for all ages.  Artists and Crafters offered unique hand-crafted items with many providing demonstrations of their work during the event.  Music and entertainment continued throughout the event as well.

Food vendors served award-winning BBQ, homemade ice cream, kettle corn, deep-fried calzones, freshly made pizza, Zul’s frozen lemonade, funnel cake, cinnamon rolls, mini donuts made to order, WV pepperoni rolls and more. There was something delicious for everyone! Adults sipped away on a variety of craft and domestic ale at the WV Craft Beer Garden, along with select wines from Lambert’s Winery.

This was the sixth year the event has been in operation in the state. For this year’s competition, 28 professional teams took to their smokers and grills to create some of the most deliciously barbecued meat ever tasted. The pro teams had to cook chicken, ribs, pork and brisket. Of those teams, the WV Grand Champion was Under the Radar, Allen Clem from Kingsport, Tennessee, who won $2,700. The Reserve Grand Champion was Who Cares BBQ, who won $1,700. Who Cares BBQ’s Don Cook of Charlotte, North Carolina also won one of the rib contests held on May 1.
