Rough third quarter dooms junior varsity Buccaneers in 55-38 setback to Bridgeport

TENNERTON – A dreadful third quarter cost the Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity Buccaneers a chance at a victory against the Bridgeport Indians Monday night in a home contest.

The Bucs led 28-23 at the break but were outscored by a 23-2 margin in the third quarter dropping a 55-38 contest.

The Bucs raced out to a 13-10 lead after one quarter of action getting six points from Zach Calef-Boring and Shelton Thropp while Shawn Blandino added a free throw.

Buckhannon-Upshur extended their lead in the second quarter winning it by a 15-13 margin.

Oliver King and Thropp each had four points while Gage Raschella dropped in a three-pointer and Blandino and Ian Strader each added a basket.

That gave the Bucs their 28-23 lead at intermission.

The Bucs managed just one field goal from Blandino in the third quarter allowing Bridgeport 23 points as they fell behind by a 46-30 score.

B-U also wound up losing the final quarter by a 9-8 score as Wilbur Snyder put in four points and Strader and Calef-Boring two each.

Thropp led the Bucs with 10 points while Calef-Boring had eight.

Bridgeport’s Tucker Hewitt led all scorers with 19 points.

The loss dropped the Bucs to 6-6 on the season heading into Wednesday’s outing with Lewis County.

They will return to action Friday hosting Elkins at 5:45 p.m.
