TENNERTON — Sponsors, coaches and volunteers poured their blood, sweat, and tears into organizing the inaugural Upshur County Youth Baseball and Softball (UCYBS) summer camp, which kicked off last Monday, July 11 and wrapped up on Wednesday, July 13. Camp participants took full advantage of the camp to work on their skills with coaches, players and alumni from all levels of Upshur County baseball.
The UCYBS organization enjoyed a massive turnout every evening during the three-day camp, with 82 campers on Monday and an average of over 80 kids on each of the subsequent days. Campers got the opportunity to hear from and work with both B-UHS Head Softball Coach Levi Bender and B-UHS Head Baseball Coach Adam Squires, as well as several of their assistants. Many familiar faces were in attendance, all followers of Upshur County baseball and softball, as standout B-UHS alumni, including recent Glenville State University Lady Pioneer commit Shelby McDaniels and West Virginia Wesleyan College Lady Bobcats’ All-American pitcher Alli Robinson. Each offered their own unique perspectives on the games of baseball and softball to the young campers, encouraging them to keep chasing individual improvement through their passion for the game. A bevy of current B-UHS baseball and softball players also volunteered time to work with the next generation of players to don the blue and white.
Overall, with a ton of hard-work from UCYBS President Jordan Westfall, Vice President Luke Payne and Secretary John Egress, the camp came together perfectly, with a massive turnout and plenty of fun. The camp officially wrapped up with snow cones and a slip and slide drill, which provided a chance to let loose after a three-day grind. The UCYBS leadership would like to offer a sincere thank you to the group of volunteers who made the camp possible. Of course, a special thanks is in order to all the current and former Buckhannon-Upshur High School softball and baseball players, as well as the other teenagers for helping these kids learn the game of baseball. UCYBS also appreciates the volunteers, including those who worked concessions and handled the registration process for making this camp a reality.
The sign-ups for UCYBS’ fall season will end this coming Saturday for fall ball. In-person registration will be at the back field at Larry West Complex on both Tuesday, July 19 and Thursday, July 21 from 5:45 p.m. until about 8:10 p.m. If interested, sign up at www.ucybs.com.
